the beauty project.

I have had the privilege of photographing some amazing women and girls.  These women that I photograph are not models - they are mamas, daughters, friends, wives.  They come in all forms.  Some are young with hope and excitement for the future.  Some are older - with the wisdom and patience that only age can bring.  But they all share one common theme - they have something to offer, something to give.  And that “something”, that story, is what makes them truly beautiful.

They have no idea how much beauty radiates from them! I know that because I’m behind the camera and I can see it in their face! When I came to this realization, it caused me to think deeply about what real, true, lasting beauty is.  It’s not in the brand of your jeans, or the size for that matter. It’s not the amount of followers you have on social media or the number of items you have on your to-do list.  This kind of beauty comes slowly.  It comes from the look they give their children when they watch them play.  It comes from the care that they put into creating something.  The heart they put into their marriage.  The grit they put into overcoming challenges.  And it doesn’t come from the straightness of their teeth or how well behaved their kids are. It comes straight from their eyes. The eyes have a hard time lying. They show us for who we really are. They show all the hurt and love and happiness within us.  And that, my friends, is truly beautiful.

what is the beauty project?

I honestly feel that every woman needs a photo of herself that she feels beautiful in.  The one that she looks at sometimes when she’s down and says to herself, “ok. I got this. I have something to offer.”  We need that sometimes.

We as women have so many things we are trying to balance. Women today have such a great opportunity to influence and spread love and goodness.  But with that opportunity we find ourselves trying to balance our busy lives. Usually our lives are filled with so many good things that we feel guilty cutting anything out and that causes us to be tired, really tired. That’s why we need each other and that’s why we need to reach out.

So this project, “The Beauty Project’ is really for me and you. It’s to document these women. The women and girls that don’t know they are beautiful. The ones that feel self conscious when I put the camera in their face.  The timid ones with a story.  The ones that have something to offer - and that includes all of us.  We all have something to offer. Every woman is her own kind of incredible.

The Beauty Project will be a collaboration of creatives working together to honor this woman.  It will be a professional photoshoot of this woman to showcase her beauty - both inside and out.  It is also a way for other professionals to show their love through their art.  Sometimes that will mean make up artists will give her a makeover, or local dress boutiques will loan dresses, or florists will make her a bouquet.  It will be a chance for photographers to capture the real her.  All for free - because there isn’t a price tag on real beauty.

My hope is that The Beauty Project will catch fire and creatives all over will share their art through these amazing women.  If you are a creative and would love to contribute to this project, please email me at rachael@rachaelcutler.com

who is the beauty project?

I want to represent the every day woman.  The women in our lives that think they are normal and plain but really have so much to give.  I want to share these stories through my art - photography.  I want to give other woman the encouragement to keep fighting, to keep chasing down those dreams.

I want this project to be something that uplifts and inspires.  The kind of stories that you can read on a good day to give you that extra push to accomplish some of the things we have on our plate.  But…I also want these to be the kind of stories that you can read on the “less than perfect days” - understanding that there are women out there for you.  Women who will laugh with you and cry with you.  Women who support you. We all want improvement and we all want to be better. And we can be. We can get there. And we can help each other.

what does a beautiful woman look like?

She is a woman of grit and virtue. She is a fighter that can accomplish anything she puts her mind to.  She’s strong enough to chase her dreams but also tender enough to hold an infant or calm a crying child.  She’s my own kind of beautiful - not anyone else’s version.  She believes she has something to offer.  She’s not perfect, but she’s improving. She knows she can change the world by her innate divine nature, whether that means affecting millions or by raising one valuable child.
